Jersey is a fabric made not by weaving threads on a loom, but by knitting, i.e. by weaving a thread, obtained with needles, crochets or knitting machines, in which the yarn forms loops or bushings, lined up side by side to form a stripe.
At the end of the 19th century, the inhabitants, mostly fishermen, of an island located in Great Britain, in the English Channel, used garments made of a heavy, very soft and naturally elastic knit.
This fabric was named Jersey, after the island itself, but was not immediately used for clothing and fashion.
It was Coco Chanel, in the inter-war period, who was the first to use Jersey to make fashion garments, and moreover in the world of women's clothing.
The cotton jersey fabric does not require ironing. It can be conveniently machine washed at 40°C and air dried.
